Our Wonderful World – Some Doubles

This morning Monica and I walked through the back field in hopes that we would be able to sneak up on the Wood Ducks. As it usually happens, when you’re all planned and prepared nothing shows up.

Although the Wood Ducks were absent, several other little friends were present. The Cedar Waxwings were right outside the backdoor, the female Robin was up in a tree at the edge of the woods, the little Downy Woodpecker was scaling a tree, and the big Fox Squirrel was really kind of all over the place.

Today it is about 15 degrees warmer than yesterday, but very overcast. I’m really impressed at how well our Nikon D7200’s work in all conditions. Sure I like the bright sunlight as much as any other photographer, it certainly makes things easier, but like they say, you have to weather the weather no matter what the weather.

The Cedar Waxwings have been bountiful all winter long and we have certainly been thankful for them. Several times when we couldn’t get out anywhere, these beauties have been right here close to enjoy. With that airbrushed look, the bright tips of color, and in today’s case, I think they woke up a little quick: it looks like two of the three were having a bad hair day.

The Robin kind of surprised me. I looked at her through the lens and thought, it’s just a Robin. When I looked at her on the computer I wasn’t so sure, but thanks to the allaboutbirds.com site, it turns out I was correct. She was a for sure a juvenile female American Robin.

The Downy Woodpecker, always fun to watch them flit from tree to tree and run around the back side of the tree as you move around it trying to capture a shot of them. It’s almost like a game of tag…or I guess it’s more like freeze tag with the camera.

And then there’s the Fox Squirrel. We have two really large Fox Squirrels that frequent the backyard area. The above one is very typical of a large Fox Squirrel. The other one has proven to be more allusive, but he is the one I really want to get a good picture of, as he looks like someone glued a big white marshmallow onto his nose. It’s really very comical to see him running around the backyard.
