Well May 2nd, the quarantine restrictions have relaxed a little, and it was a chance to get out and enjoy the bright blue sky and sunny day. We had a road trip day with my brother and sister in law, Mike and Heather. Shout out to Mike for driving us around all day letting me jump out and take some pictures.
In between Hillsboro and Chillicothe Ohio is the tiny little town of Bainbridge. I’ve heard from a few people that some Bald Eagles have been sighted near state route 50 and state route 41, and thankfully as we were driving right in that area…there he was way up in the top of a sycamore tree. A quick U-turn and we were sitting in pretty good shape for some first time ever Ohio Bald Eagle photographs.
Because of the location we couldn’t get as close as we wanted, but we were able to still get some pretty good shots of one of America’s most prolific birds. In the slideshow above, one of the photos is certainly not of the best quality, but by chance I managed to capture the eagle blinking with his nictitating eyelid. Bald Eagles not only have this thin membrane or inner eyelid, but their bottom eyelid is also bigger than their top, so they also actually blink from the bottom towards the top. In the picture you get a chance to see both.
In the shots above you also get to see the amazing hooked beak, the feathers blowing in the wind, and of course those piercing eyes. High atop his sycamore tree he waits and watches for his prey, surveying the landscape. In the blink of an eye he could jump from this treetop and soar on the wind, dive down and capture a meal, or gracefully just fly off to another roost or perhaps his nest.
