A couple of days ago, I took Friday off from work. Even when I went to bed Thursday night, I was undecided as to what I was going to do with my day off. Sleep in, go do some photography, work around the house, or just sit and relax. Thankfully, I decided to go ahead and get up early as if I was going to work, and I went out for some bird photography. It turned out to be a very profitable morning. Indigo Buntings, Great White Egrets, Cormorants, Gulls, and as you can see, Great Blue Herons.
The above photos are just a few of some of the great shots I was able to capture of the Blue Herons. There actually three different birds in the same small area, and I was lucky enough to get pictures of all of them. In looking at all of the pictures I took, I’m thinking that at least one of them was a juvenile, probably this years hatchling just a few months ago. If you look at the last two pictures above, he seems to look kind of “blotchy” in his coloring. He definitely doesn’t appear to be as stoic and regal as more elder birds. Now that I’m on the wrong side of 50, I wonder if people describe me as elder and stoic – although I’m fairly certain “regal” is not an adjective used.
I have some more photos of these beautiful Blue Herons and I will share them on the next blog. I was able to get a few closeups that came out very well. I missed the “golden hour” by the time I got to this particular location, but I still had some good lighting that morning, and it really helped to bring out the birds natural multi-faceted coloring and design.

Thanks! It was a pretty fun morning. There was actually another guy out in the water in a wetsuit that day. I’m not sure what he was doing, but he startled the birds and thus the flying shots.
